Some ELA technological standards I feel most prepared to teach are W/WHST.8 “Use Multiple Sources” and RL.7 “Multimedia:” Literature. To be able to find relevant and credible sources is an important tool to have in any situation. As a student, finding credible sources is important when writing papers or simply wanting to find out about a subject in more detail. As a future teacher, being able to find credible sources is important to being able to correctly relay information to my students. It would be incredibly embarrassing and I would not be doing my job correctly if I used a not credible, unreliable, and biased source to teach my students. I also will need to be able to teach my students how to correctly research topics and properly cite the original authors. Using databases is a great place to start. Being able to use digital media to compare written literature to audio or visual versions is important as I am interested in becoming an English teacher. As a student going through high school, when my teachers showed me clips from films or plays that we were reading in class, it allowed me to better visualize the characters and settings. A standard that I do not feel comfortable yet would be adding audio recordings to presentations. As a student, my teachers never did this so I have never been exposed to this method of teaching.
I think a great tool that can support positive learning of not only topics discussed in the classroom, but also what it means to be a good digital citizen is the use of social media. For example, in our class we are using to twitter to learn about other student's in the class and receive information from professionals in the field by following their pages. This will develop a positive online environment for our class. Another application that we happen to be using in this class, that I want to use in my future class is a blogging site. Allowing students to express how they feel about certain assignments will help me get to know my students better and help out my students. The blog will also allow students to learn about "netiquette" and how to positively add to the online community. I plan on teaching high school students literature and using the weekly blog can show their progress throughout the year and how relationships online can help develop in class relationships. Having students respond to what we read in a more relaxed way may help stem creativity and conversation about the things we are reading.
Listed below is a copy of my monthly newsletter that will be digitally sent to the parents of my class. I enjoyed creating this assignment because it allowed me to think about what it will be like to actually have a classroom full of students and wanting to get to know them and their parents. This assignment is very realistic because as a student in the past many of my teachers created a newsletter similar to what the assignment called for. Creating this newsletter, I learned how to add margins and a page break. I honestly did not know how to use the page break before, but it is a really helpful tool that I will now use very often. I think adding a border can change the whole look of the newsletter in a very positive way. I did not like having to add pictures because they can mess up the format of everything. This assignment took me a while because I was having trouble keeping the format and spacing consistent. Next time I create a newsletter, I hope to be able to add more visual effects.
