Blog Post #2

As a student, my use of Microsoft Word has ranged from writing papers, to creating brochures, as well as creating outlines for speeches and notes.  My favorite aspect of Microsoft Word as a student is definitely the spell check.  When I am in "the zone" while writing a paper, spelling and grammar issues are usually left on the back burner, but once I finish, Microsoft Word helps me make sure I have as little errors as possible.  In the classroom, my previous teachers have used Microsoft Word to create handouts to use in class and to make notes and corrections on our papers.  Teachers have also used Word to demonstrate how to properly create an outline or how to fix margins etc.

My experience with copyright and fair use guidelines in an educational setting includes research databases I have used in the past.  For example, JSTOR has many peer reviewed journals that I have used in previous research papers.  Of course, I have to cite the authors of the material and only had the chance to use these databases because my high school and FSU pays to allow access for all students.  In my classroom in the future, my instructional material is mainly going to be reading materials since I am going into English Education.  Finding out if the author has a copyright for the particular work is important before I use the piece of literature in my classroom.  Teachers in the past have mainly used the materials in the textbooks to avoid these problems, but I hope to find materials outside of the textbook as well that are legal to use in a classroom setting.  When my students are creating their own works, emphasizing citations is important to make sure students don't plagiarize.

A big issue in today's classroom is cyberbullying.  Similar to bullying, a perfect solution simply does not exist since every case and student affected  by bullying is different.  However, as a teacher I must be proactive to try to prevent any types of bullying.  Being aware of student's emotions and how they interact with each other is a great first step.  Teaching students what cyberbullying is and how to recognize it if one their friends is being affected is also important.  Creating a safe learning environment may help students feel more comfortable to reach out if they need guidance after being a victim of cyberbullying.
Another issue is academic honesty.  Students will find any way possible to make sure they get good grades even if it is not an honorable way of doing so.  Cell phones have cause many students to be academically dishonest.  It is very tempting for students to use their cell phone to look up an answer on a test.  A solution to this problem is to make sure that every student puts their cell phones inside a backpack. Being aware of students as they are taking a test is important.
As technology grows and expands, so do the expenses.  Not every student has the access to a computer or wifi on a daily basis.  This is known as the digital divide.  During a transitional period like we are experiencing today where almost everyone has access to these tools, there are still a lot of people that simply cannot afford it or do not want to use it.  If this is the case in a classroom, as a teacher I can make sure all homework assignments can be completed with or without technology.  Making sure every student has the proper tools to complete assignments is important as a teacher.
