Blog Post #6

School websites are a great resource that students and parents have access to that allows them to stay up to date with teachers, classes, assignments, and grades.  The school site I looked up is American Heritage School (https://www.ahschool.com/plantation-campus), which is a private school with grades from Pre-K to 12th grade.  Although I can not access any class courses due to password protection, I do get a sense of what type of school it is. There are links to different programs, courses offered, athletics, fine arts, and admissions to the school.  A school calendar is available and any important information for parents is also public.  I can also see from the website that they require iPads.
Along with word processing to create documents such as newsletters, tests, and worksheets, I also plan on using presentation software to include graphics and multimedia to teach my students.  Online software such as google apps makes connecting with students very easy.  Some of my teachers in high school used google classroom as a connection between us, parents, and teachers.  They would post assignments and reminders that I found very helpful.  It is also an easy way to share with parents because most people have a google account and if not it is free and easy to create one.  Allowing students to use google apps such as google docs allows students to share and create documents together and is especially helpful when working on group projects.  Google docs is also helpful for revising my students works.  If a student shares his/her document with me, I can check their progress while they work on their drafts rather then having them print and bring multiple hard copy drafts.

Visiting the toolbox this past week was very cool, even though I have been there in the past.  It was cool to see the new updates and what has been created in the past year.  Some tools that were not there the last time was the iPad connector, Osmo.  I played the geography game and it was actually pretty fun.  I could totally see teachers in a younger age group setting using this tool to let kids be playful with each other while learning a thing or two.  The swivel was also a new technology that was not there last time.  I think this a great way to manage a class when students are working in groups for an assignment.  It will help the teacher monitor the discussion within the group and make sure students are staying on task.  I also learned that the swivel can be used for distance learning.  This can be a great first step to allow students who may not be able to be present in an actual classroom experience and learn first hand everything that is happening in that classroom.
